The category isssssssss THE MIRACLE OF EVOLUTION! Today I woke up and threw myself out of bed. Stumbling from the bedroom to the kitchen, I started the kettle that boiled the water, which longed to be united with the tablespoon of instant coffee in my favorite jack-o-lantern mug. Breathing in and breathing out. My heart pumped blood through my body, and estrogen pushed my physical self closer to the feminine-coffee-loving-energetic-essence that is me.
Once again, the question crossed my mind.
Why am I here?
In my car, a small dog runs into the street. I gasp—causing my partner to slam on the breaks—saving the Chihuahua's life. Arriving outside of my favorite coffee shop, I think about the woman riding in the mobility scooter who would have really missed her dog, if we had run it over.
Leaving the car I notice, somehow, there is a full art Acerola’s Mischief under my foot—one of my favorite Pokémon cards. I half remember buying this card many months ago. Perhaps it returned as a gift from the universe for saving the small dog?
I think about the dog and I. How many gasps saved us throughout our lives—or the lives of our many ancestors throughout the history of puppies and of humanity. It’s a miracle that we’re alive today. Me sitting in a coffee shop and the doggo sitting in the basket of the old woman’s scooter. I spend a moment admiring the glittery Pokémon card that appeared under my foot. Yet another magical moment in this extended event we call life.
Today, I’m grateful to all the chihuahuas and all the monkeys that made it possible for that dog and I to exist. And all the many ancestors that survived, so we can share this world today. Each breath is a miracle and I hope I don’t let them go to waste.
