The category isssssssss bird songs. I’ve become obsessed with birds. It’s getting a little much. I want to join the birds in the sky and fly off with them and sit on the top of a tree. Then, from the deepest parts of my lungs, join in avian self expression by singing.
It started with me throwing a few tiny balls of bread to the little chikadees and pigeons. Now I’ve learned they’re actually House Sparrows. Oh em gee, don’t get me started on the Short Face Tumbler Pigeon.
I find myself staring into trees with an app open that can determine the birds by their singing. I go on tracking walks and make notes of every bird I see and try to determine their species. What’s next!? Migration patterns?? A house full of parakeets?!?!
What is it about these singing, feathered, fluffballs with wings, that send me into a zen state? The idea of flying is fun. Dashing away into the clouds like Mark from Invincible would be wonderful. That's not it. They’re beautiful and vulnerable like living flowers—always in danger. I realize that I’m anthropamorphising them but I see myself in them. We’re both vulnerable and colorful—bopping around looking for the next worm. All we want in this world is to sing. So today, I’ll sing without fear, like the Northern Mockingbird in the tree outside my window. I hope you will too.
